Read the utilization report

Utilization just means how much each can is earning versus sitting idle. This is the report that finds the money.

  1. Open it weekly

Reports, then Utilization. Utilization is a simple idea: how much is each can actually earning, versus sitting idle? Five minutes a week here is enough to change what you buy and what you bill.

  2. Revenue per can

Every can, ranked by what it earned. A can that trails the fleet for a few months is a candidate to move to a busier area, or to sell before you buy the next one.

  3. Idle days in the yard

Days a can sat in the yard earning nothing. Idle days are money you lose invisibly: you paid for that steel, and it is not paying you back. If your 20 yard cans are never idle and the 40s always are, this report just wrote your next purchase order.

  4. The unbilled extra days

Cans sitting out past their included rental days, with the extra-day charges already added up next to each one. This is money you have already earned that has not been billed yet. Check it before billing day so none of it slips.

  5. Overdue pickups

Cans that should have come home. Every extra week on a site is a week that can is not earning on the next job.
